The gifts new parents still value after the first year are usually time, food, and keepsakes that hold a voice, a handprint or a story. Baby clothes and gear get outgrown. A meal train or a free afternoon costs nothing, a footprint kit or a book of letters costs little, and frames and memoir books cost more.
We make a baby book app, described at the end of this page. None of the links below are affiliate links, and we earn nothing from them. We checked every price on the maker's own website on 16 Oct 2026, in US dollars. Prices change, so check again before you buy.
What can you give new parents for free?
Your time and your organizing are the most useful free gifts.
- Organize a meal train. A shared calendar lets friends sign up to bring dinner on set days, so the parents don't get six lasagnas in one week and nothing after. Meal Train lets you create a free page, and as of 16 Oct 2026 it charges $10 to turn on Meal Train Plus, which adds more than one meal a day plus childcare, errands and rides. People who live far away can send a gift card or a donation through the same page.
- Give a specific shift. "Let me know if you need anything" puts the work back on the parents. "I'll come Saturday from 9 to 11 so you can sleep" doesn't. A walk with the stroller, a load of laundry, an afternoon with an older sibling, or a grocery run are all worth more than they cost you.
- Write the baby a letter. Write what you saw when you first met them, what their parents were like that week, and what you hope for them. Seal it and write the age to open it on the envelope. Our guide to writing a letter to your baby for their first birthday has prompts that work for anyone, not only parents.
What are good handmade gifts for new parents?
Homemade food gets used right away, and a recording can be kept for years.
- Freezer meals. Two or three dinners in containers you don't need back. Label each one with what it is, the date you made it and how to reheat it, so a tired parent can follow it without texting you. Ask about allergies and what they actually like to eat before you cook.
- A voice for later. Record yourself reading a favorite childhood book, or telling the story of the day the baby was born, and send the file to the parents. It costs nothing, and the parents can keep it for the child to hear when they're older. It's a good fit for grandparents who live far away.
What are meaningful gifts for new parents under $50?
These are small enough to give at a baby shower and made to be kept.
- A footprint kit. Pearhead's clean-touch ink pad costs $5.99 as of 16 Oct 2026, with one small ink pad and two imprint cards for a baby's handprint or footprint. Pearhead says the pad fits a hand or foot up to 2.25 by 3.5 inches, so give it early.
- A book of letters to open later. Letters to My Baby by Lea Redmond, from Chronicle Books, costs $14.95 as of 16 Oct 2026. It has 12 letters, each starting with a prompt, plus stickers to seal them, so parents can write now and give the set to their child years from now.
- A recordable storybook. Hallmark's The Wonder of You Recordable Storybook costs $39.99 as of 16 Oct 2026. You record your voice reading it, so a grandparent can read to the baby from far away. Hallmark lists it for ages 18 months and up, so a grown-up holds it and plays it until then.
- A memory book that keeps going. Lucy Darling's Little Animal Lover Baby Memory Book costs $39.99 as of 16 Oct 2026. It has one page per month with a photo for the first year and keeps going through age five, which suits parents who want a printed book on the shelf. If you aren't sure the parents will fill it in, our post on what to write in a baby book is a good thing to send with it.
What are bigger gifts for new parents that last?
The bigger gifts that last are paid help, a year of Storyworth and a digital frame, and they work best from a group or from grandparents.
- Paid help. A few hours of house cleaning or a postpartum doula gives parents time and rest. Prices depend on where they live, so call a local service, pay for a set number of hours, and let the parents book the dates. This is also a good group gift.
- A year of stories from the grandparents. Storyworth sends one storyteller a weekly question by email for a year, then prints their answers in a hardcover book. Storyworth's Basic plan, with a year of weekly questions and one hardcover book, was $69 on its pricing page on 16 Oct 2026. Storyworth sometimes shows a lower price, so check at checkout. Given to new grandparents, it becomes a book their grandchild can read later.
- A digital frame the family can fill. The Aura Carver is a 10.1-inch frame that costs $149 on Aura's site as of 16 Oct 2026. Aura says there are no subscription fees and that family and friends can add photos from anywhere.
A family photo session with a local photographer is another lasting gift, though prices vary too much by city to list. Ask the parents first, since some want photos in the first weeks and others would rather wait until they've slept.
How did we choose these gifts?
We chose gifts that parents still use or keep after the first year, at several price points, including free and handmade ones. Every product above is on its maker's own website, and we checked each page and price on 16 Oct 2026. We have no relationship with any of these makers and earn nothing if you buy. Where a price depends on your city, like cleaning, doulas and photographers, we describe the gift instead of naming a business.
What's a good gift for your partner after the birth?
Give something that shows you noticed what they went through. A letter about the day your baby was born, written while you still remember it, costs nothing. Pair it with time, like a protected nap every day for a week, or a morning out alone while you handle the baby. If you want to buy something, choose one of the keepsakes above and write the baby's name and birth date inside.
What should grandparents give for a first birthday?
Grandparents can give their own story. A recordable storybook, a Storyworth year or a letter to open at 18 gives the grandchild their voice and memories later. If they live far away, a shared frame or a regular video call on the monthly birthday keeps them close in between. Our page for grandparents covers how families share photos with them.
The app we make: Our Little World is a private baby book app for iPhone and iPad. Our Little World finds your child in the photos on your iPhone and lays them out month by month. Two parents share one family space. Grandparents and family members you invite can view what's shared with them, never face data. Gifts open on the website soon. Our Little World isn't for Android users, for families who want a printed book, or for anyone who needs a free plan.
